Shooting
Remember the B.E.E.F
- Balance: Feet shoulder width apart. The foot of the hand you shoot with should be slightly forward. Your knees should be bent. You should feel stable against the ground, no one should be able to tip you over.
- Eyes: Find a spot on the rim. Front, middle, back…doesn’t matter as long as you constantly pick that same spot. I personally chose the back of the rim because more of my shots fell short. The important thing is pick a place and stay there.
- Elbow: Do what’s comfortable, many coaches will tell you to keep your elbow in and align it your forearm straight with the hoop. You don’t have to listen to that advice, just keep your elbow where you feel most comfortable…don’t stress if your elbow is sticking out a bit.
- Follow Through: After you shoot, your arm should be fully extended, wrist bent forward and downward. Your arm and wrist should look like a goose neck.

Flat On Your Back: Lay flat on your back and practice shooting straight up in the air (about 3 feet in the air). As you shoot, remember to keep your elbow in and snap your wrist. Try to get the ball going straight up and down. After a while of this you will start to feel the burn in your shoulder and arms, it’s good to feel this. It means your working to build up stamina. This is a great and easy drill to to when your laying in your bed or couch.
Depending on your skill level and development, you can use one or two hands. One hand is better than two because it allows you to keep control of the ball without any guidance.

Muscle Memory Shooting:
- Using your right hand only (left hand by your side), shoot 15 times – 3 feet away from the basket.
- Using your left hand only (right hand by your side), shoot 15 times – 3 feet away from the basket.

Mikan Drill
- Start under the basket, as if you were going to take a layup
- Jump off your left leg and shoot a right handed shot against the backboard
- Retrieve the ball and in the same motion jump off your right foot and shoot with your left hand
- Shoot 15 shots from each side
- Repeat 3 times
**********
Distance shooting
- Start with muscle memory shooting from the middle of the rim – shoot 10 shots
- After you shoot 10 shots, step back one step and shoot another 10 shots
- If you make 6/10 then step back a step. If you don’t make 6 out of 10 then shoot another 10 shots
- If you don’t make 6/10 twice then you will start over at the first spot
- The goal is to get as farther away as possible (your range)
- After you miss the 6 out of 10 shots three times, the drill/game is over
**********
Dribble and Pop
- Set up chair at each end of the free throw line
- Start at half court and dribble w/ your right hand to the chair
- Stop w/ two feet, square up, be balanced (don’t fall forward) and shoot
- Repeat 10 times on each side (left side, left handed dribble).
- Act like the chair is a defender and get your shot off quickly
**********
Spot up jumper
- Start on the baseline and toss the ball w/ a spin to yourself a few feet away
- Catch and shoot in one motion
- Retrieve the ball and dribble to where you just shot from
- Toss the ball w/ a spin to yourself a few feet away
- Catch and shoot in one motion
- Repeat this until you get to the other baseline

Beat the Pro:
- Use your imagination and pretend your going against a Pro (let’s say Kobe)
- Start at the free throw line. If you make the foul shot, you get one point. If you happen to miss, Kobe gets 3 points.
- Next, take a jump shot outside the lane (wherever you feel comfortable).
- Every shot you get in, you’re rewarded with 1 point. For every shot you miss, Kobe gets 2 points.
- Keep shooting from different areas on the court until a players gets to 21.
**********
Quick Shot:
- Jump shot from the foul line, follow with left-handed layup
- Repeat up to 21 points
- 2 points for a jumper, 1 point for a layup
**********
Sixty Twelve Six:
- Start out with 10 shots from the left wing
- Follow up with 2 free throws
- Follow last free throw with a layup
- Repeat by shooting 10 shots coming from the left elbow
- Repeat the 2 free throws and layup
- Continue drill with 10 shots now coming from the top of the key
- Mirror the drill now on the right side of the key
- By the time your done you should of taken 10 shots from 6 spots which is 60 shots, 2 free throws after every set which is 12 free throws, and a layup after every 2nd free throw which is 6 layups.
**********
