Why Is Keeping Hydrated Important?

Basketball is a game of spurts, players are constantly moving.  Whether its indoor or outdoor in the scorching heat, you need to stay hydrated.  When you’re hydrated you become fatigued, light-headed and may have cramps.  It can get very dangerous when you don’t drink enough fluids for you body.  I’ve seen cases where a player just passes out on the court because of dehydration.   I don’t want this to happen to you so make sure you stay hydrated with the following tips.

Drink before, during and after

It is very important to drink water (preferably) or Gatorade prior, during and after playing basketball.  During a workout a player sweats out fluid stored in your body.  Your body depends on water to sustain chemical reactions and maintain correct body temp.  It is vitally important to start the workout with fluids in your system and as you sweat it out to immediately replace it.  Keep your body hydrated at all times to get the most out of your performance on the court.

Listen To Your Body

If you feel like your going to pass out during a game chances are your dehydrated.  Don’t continue to run up and down the court because of pride.  Hold up your hand and ask to come out of the game.  Sit down for a few minutes and hydrate yourself so you can go back out there and steal the show!

Don’t Over Due It

Yes, its true that drinking too much water can have a negative effect on your body, it’s called water intoxication.  When you drink too much water your electrolytes become unbalanced which can cause your nerves to become erratic.

Tips

  • Keep a water bottle with you at all times, don’t depend on the water bubbler.
  • Cut soda and other sugary drinks out from your diet
  • Drink to hydrate, not to suppress hunger
